Small Town Murder, Big-Time Page Turner

A fast, twisty mystery that doesn’t waste your time (and keeps you guessing anyway).

Review by Maria Antokas

If you’re looking for a clean, fast-paced, “just one more chapter” kind of mystery, Track Her Down by Melinda Leigh delivers exactly that. Its no drama, no fluff, just straight-up storytelling that moves. This was my first introduction to Sheriff Bree Taggert and her investigator partner (and life partner) Matt Flynn, and the dynamic is exactly what you expect: she’s tough, damaged, and driven; he’s steady, supportive, and basically the emotional support human we all deserve. A little too perfect? Maybe. But also… not mad about it.

The story kicks off with a solid hook. A couple found shot in their beds, discovered by their teenage daughter Claire. And guess what? Claire is the next victim. From there, it’s a steady unraveling of suspects, motives, and small-town secrets, all woven together in a way that keeps things moving without making you work too hard (which, frankly, is sometimes exactly what you want). The supporting cast (especially Bree’s team) Adds just enough personality to keep things interesting without hijacking the plot.

This isn’t one of those books that tries to reinvent the genre. It knows exactly what it is: a quick, twisty, entertaining read that keeps your attention right up to the final page. And it works. I had my guesses, changed my mind a few times, and stayed engaged the whole way through—which is really the point, isn’t it? Safe to say, I’ll be back for the next Melinda Leigh release.
