Book Review: Night Watcher by Daphne Woolsoncroft

True crime junkies, gather ‘round. Daphne Woolsoncroft isn’t just dipping a toe into the crime pool-she’s been swimming laps in it for years. Her aunt’s disappearance (still unsolved, still chilling) lit the fuse, and she’s been chasing dark stories ever since. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s the voice behind the wildly popular Going West podcast, which she co-hosts with her equally handsome boyfriend Heath (and yes, the website photo does not hurt their brand).

But now Woolsoncroft has jumped from podcast mic to book deal with her debut thriller Night Watcher, and it’s a ride. Our main character, Nola, has some serious childhood baggage. She witnessed her babysitter’s murder at the age of eight. Yikes. Even worse, the killer was a serial monster dubbed “The Hiding Man,” who slipped away like smoke and was never caught.

Fast-forward twenty years: Nola is living her life (or trying to), and guess who decides to crawl out of the shadows? Yep, The Hiding Man and apparently Nola’s name is scribbled at the top of his hit list. Why her? Well, that’s the mystery, and Woolsoncroft plays it close to the chest. Clues are buried just deep enough to keep you flipping pages like a nosy neighbor peeking through the blinds.

It’s creepy, it’s twisty, and the suspense pays off in a finale that lands with a satisfying crash. Nice work, Daphne. You’ve officially graduated from true crime podcaster to thriller novelist, and I, for one, can’t wait to get my hands on your next book, The Season of Sinking, coming out next summer.

Until then, I’ll just be side-eyeing every shadowy corner of my house and maybe double-checking the locks. Thanks for that.
