Oh look, another emotionally damaged ex-cop with a dark past, a tragic love story, and enough witty one-liners to open for a stand-up act – but somehow, Sami Kierce makes it work. Once destined for Columbia Med School, Sami takes a “hard left” after a post-graduation summer in Spain ends with a girl dead in bed next to him and a bloody knife in his hand. I mean… we’ve all had wild travel stories, but yikes. Flash forward almost twenty years, and plot twist: the supposedly dead girl shows up “very much alive” in one of his crime-solving classes. Cue the mental spiral and the murder mystery two-step.
Sami’s now juggling a baby, an ex-con stalker, a very skeptical but loving cool wife, and an heiress-on-the-run who may or may not have faked her own kidnapping. This is peak Coben: rapid-fire dialogue, so many twists you’ll need a neck brace, and a plot that practically sprints. Oh, and did I mention the ex-con might’ve murdered Sami’s ex-fiancée? Because of course he did. Everyone has a backstory here, and none of them are boring.
Bottom line: Nobody’s Fool is a binge-worthy, brain-twisting, speed-read of a thriller that hits all the right notes. Coben’s still got the magic touch — snappy, sharp, and cinematic. I already hear the Netflix “da-dum” sound. Don’t wait. Grab it now before your book club spoils the ending.
